AI Servers Crowd Out Consumer DRAM as TrendForce Flags Supply Crunch Into 2027
TrendForce's mid-September DRAM bulletin says AI infrastructure demand has tightened supply enough to cut PC and smartphone output, while its 2027 NAND outlook sees enterprise SSD orders setting new highs in 4Q26 even as consumer NAND weakens on new Chinese capacity.
TrendForce's DRAM Market Bulletin dated 16 September states that AI infrastructure demand has tightened DRAM supply, with long-term agreement lock-ins restricting smaller buyers as prices climb. On the PC side, OEM price hikes are curbing notebook output and channel restocking is dimming the 2027 demand outlook. On the mobile side, surging mobile DRAM costs are pushing brands to exit low-margin lines and pilot alternative memory chip sources. The common thread is that suppliers keep shifting capacity toward server and HBM applications, which supports contract prices even where end demand visibly weakens.
TrendForce's spot and module price pages, last updated 21 September, show where that allocation is landing. DDR5 16Gb (2Gx8) 4800/5600 averaged $56.933, up 1.67% on the session, while DDR4 16Gb (2Gx8) 3200 averaged $85.00, down 0.88%, and DDR4 8Gb (1Gx8) 3200 was flat at $46.036. The module table is more telling: DDR5 RDIMM 32GB averaged $2,050.00, up 7.90%, against DDR5 UDIMM 16GB at $235.667, up 0.71%, and DDR4 UDIMM 16GB at $164.30, up 0.37%. A server module rising more than ten times as fast as its client equivalent is the clearest available read on where wafer starts are being directed.
NAND is splitting along the same line. TrendForce's report '2027 NAND: Enterprise SSD Soars, Consumer Stalls', last modified 16 September, describes an extreme divergence in which enterprise SSD prices keep rising while PC and smartphone price increases are constrained. Enterprise SSD orders continue trending higher in 4Q26 as North American cloud providers expand strongly and scale QLC drives, with agentic AI and China's KV cache offload architecture driving incremental bit demand. Consumer NAND faces pressure from specification downgrades and newly activated capacity, with YMTC expansion and cost-downs opening the door for Chinese vendors. TrendForce expects a dual-track pricing structure to form in 2027 as Chinese suppliers capitalise on those emerging opportunities.
