NOR Flash Enters Its Tightest Market in a Decade With High-Capacity Parts Set for 90-110% Gains

TrendForce says the NOR Flash market is going through its biggest structural supply and demand shift in nearly ten years as AI products absorb capacity, with high-capacity parts set for 90% to 110% price increases in the second half of 2026 while DRAM spot trade stays thin.

TrendForce's latest memory research describes the NOR Flash market as undergoing its most significant structural shift in supply and demand in nearly a decade. AI-related products are absorbing a substantial share of production capacity, which leaves suppliers with limited room to raise NOR Flash bit output even as demand from high-end applications keeps growing. The firm expects the split to widen in the second half of 2026, with high-capacity products poised for increases of 90% to 110% while lower-density parts see far more modest moves.

The mechanism is capacity reallocation rather than a demand shock inside NOR itself. The same AI buildout that is absorbing DRAM and NAND output is soaking up the mature-node capacity that NOR depends on, leaving suppliers with little room to add bits. TrendForce's assessment points to the tightness showing up first in the high-density parts used in servers, networking equipment and automotive systems, where long qualification cycles make it hard for buyers to switch vendors quickly once allocation is set.

Spot DRAM, by contrast, has turned quiet. In the DRAM spot market on 18 September, momentum was intermittent with most enquiries focused on branded DDR5 chips at specific densities; quotes continued to edge higher but buying support was insufficient and overall trading activity was limited. The average price of DDR4 8G (1Gx8) 3200 rose to US$46.036, while DDR5 16Gb (2Gx8) 4800/5600 averaged around US$56 with a modest daily gain.

The divergence matters for procurement. Contract buyers with long-term agreements are insulated at the margin, but anyone sourcing on the spot market for high-density NOR, server DRAM or enterprise SSDs is competing against AI infrastructure budgets that are far less price-sensitive. With little near-term relief in NOR bit supply, the practical response for industrial and automotive buyers is to extend coverage and qualify second sources now rather than wait for a spot-market correction that the supply side is not signalling.
